If you are reading this post in Oulu, Finland, these greetings are coming from 10 690 kms far way, if we trust in Google and its walking guide. It didn’t occur to me earlier that Google had a precise walking guide from Forum Tower, Bangkok to our headquarters in Kasarmintie 21, Oulu. The distance is equivalent to the length of three Finlands, three Thailands and two Bangladesh.
I just moved to Bangkok to get new experiences in life and in my professional career.

Daily challenges really are substantial but also relative – Thailand is very exciting country, and BKK has its pulse you just need to feel. Coming to work here in Bangkok is a little bit different than I am used to. Or let say, we build 2,4km tunnel in Tampere, because we didn’t want to stay in 15 minutes traffic in our ’rush hours’. Here, traffic can be jammed for several hours, and I don’t hear anybody complaining, it’s normal.
Thinking about each other’s daily ways to come to work, actually reminds me about one summer when me and a colleague made a bet, that both of us will come to work by feet. Either running, walking (or crawling). This happened in Hyvinkää (southern Finland). We were living over 20km from work. He actually had 60kms and I roughly 22km. Did we do that? – you’ll find out the last chapter.
I started at the beginning of this month as a support and maintenance manager in Bangkok. Previously working as a project manager in Cargotec. Changing the position goes well with the ‘door metaphora’; sometimes there are interesting doors in front of you, and you’ll never know exactly what will be behind each door until you open it.
Being the first employee to have this full-time role in the company is very interesting indeed. New position gives a chance to enhance new skills and modify the position as I like. I think we all have faced good and bad service in different daily situations, so being a support person is one of the roles many people can relate to at least in some level. Or can you remember the latest experience with good service you received? I can. An emphatic attitude is one of the characters in addition to genuine willingness to help and be the top notch problem solver for our customers, and that is truly in Codemate’s culture.
Agile teams and fast moves
Have I had hard times for adapting to new city and new work? Yes and no. Saying goodbye for good colleagues is always hard, haven’t really heard anybody saying the opposite. Our team had an excellent ability to perform. Scientifically, nowadays core values for well performing teams relates to trust, curiosity, confidence and inspiration, recently claimed also in HBR’s article.
High performance without stress factors really sounds lucrative and after few weeks in Codemate I can say I am very proud to be a part of our organisation. Our ability to make fast actions truly amuses me. Newest and very very visible change was our brand new office we just moved in! These guys here spent few days moving bits and pieces between the floors (we moved one two floors down to bigger office) while I was working on my visa in Vietnam.
So, what happened to our bet in that summer. He won and I lost, a guy started walking towards the office around 23:00 previous evening to be at the office at 9:00. I couldn’t run that day, but to make an inner peace and get even with myself, I have been running shorter distances to work ever since. I also was re-establishing a running group in my previous work in Cargotec. My colleagues persistence to make the idea alive still admires me, and that is similar to Codemate, where talented people come up with ideas to make them alive.
Changing the familiar working environment may require few thoughts before actions. If you’re thinking about to become a part of Codemate, you’ll definitely get high performing and helping teams around you in an interesting global software development environment. We are always looking for talents to join our Bangkok team, so don’t hesitate to change.
